A Powerful Documentary on Truth, Justice, and Resilience Inside Law Enforcement.

A Black police officer navigates the harsh realities of law enforcement, battling systemic racism within the force while wrestling with his own moral code. As he works undercover to expose corruption and crime, he must confront the painful contradictions of being both a protector and a target in a world that refuses to see him as an equal.
Toronto, ON — A Darker Shade of Blue, a compelling new documentary based on the memoir A Darker Shade of Blue: A Police Officer's Memoir by veteran officer Keith Merith, offers an unflinching look inside the realities of policing, race, and resilience. With over 31 years in law enforcement, Merith's journey spans early rejection, professional isolation, frontline danger, and a determined rise through the ranks—becoming one of only a handful of Black officers to reach senior leadership within his department.
Through intimate interviews and firsthand accounts, the film reveals the emotional and institutional challenges faced by officers of color, while exploring themes of courage, integrity, and reform. At its heart, A Darker Shade of Blue is not only a story about policing—it is a story about perseverance.
The documentary examines systemic barriers within institutions, the personal cost of speaking out, and the power of community alliances forged in the face of adversity. Directed by Irina Volkova and co-written by Keith Merith and Irina Volkova, the film blends personal testimony with historical context, shedding light on decades of cultural change within law enforcement. The result is a deeply human portrait of one man's commitment to justice—both on the streets and within the system itself.
